True or false:

If you can convince a person that God doesn’t exist, you can convince that person of anything.

Last week….or maybe it was the week before? My medic crew was paged out by the county for an inmate at the county jail that had been pepper sprayed and wanted to be “checked out.”

We had barely come in from an interhospital transfer call that lasted under five hours and really had not slept more than a power nap or two and still had about four hours left on the shift when this guy……….

Now I am not making judgements about the inmate nor blowing off the call, we are responding code 3, or priority 1 depending on what your taste is for lights and sirens blasting through town around 3am when sane people sleep.

This could be a bad respiratory issue… or just something the inmate feels is bad. And we are hoping it was just feelings being hurt and not organs being damaged.

My partner and I accessed the jail and spoke with the CO’s handling the inmate to get the story from them first, so we know what we are up against. I can already hear the inmate cussing and yelling from his cell so I know he is breathing and relatively ok for the present at least, but I need to know what we are dealing with.

The inmate decided he could make a one man riot, flooded his cell by blocking his toilet and sink with toilet paper and causing enough disturbance to agitate the rest of the inmates and would not cooperate with orders to cease his disturbance until the CO’s followed protocol and used minimal force necessary to regain control of the situation.

Now, I can tell you from personal recent experience in the Correction Officer training I had last summer… what common sense should….

Getting pepper sprayed sucks. Most of us learn that going through the military and getting gassed during training to, but some of you may not know that it sucks. And those of you have nots, may think it is the worst thing in the world. Well it aint …that…bad.

I highly doubt I am a rare and exceptional person that runs into some goofballs that keep pepper spray on their person as a food condiment. Next to tazing, it is about the safest means of non lethal force you can use on a person to cause the least amount of injury. Just buttloads of discomfort.

But this situation left me with several priorities after ensuring the health and safety of me and my partner. After that… the health and safety of the inmate, and after that… the health and safety of our next patients due to cross contamination concerns.

You would not want to be my next patient if you woke up in the middle of the night with a respiratory emergency calling 911 and have my crew show up with pepper spray on our uniforms equipment and ambulance. Nor for that matter, did I want to have to take the inmate to the Emergency room and expose all the patients and staff to the fumes.

I painted the scene for you to give you a better understanding of what Spiritual Cross Contamination can look like and what we are all kind of dealing with daily in our lives by people trying to run amok and not giving a damn about keeping order in their environment.

My typical encounters with atheists, or people with Godless tendencies are really no different than encounters I have with inmates.

If that seems harsh to you, maybe you need to see both inmates and Godless people how I see them, as people deserving of help to get order restored in their lives so they aren't running amok and wondering why everyone seems to hate and abuse them.

This is what happens to people who are conned into believing lies, of varying degrees. Your soul gets imprisoned. And God said the most true words ever spoken through His Son, “Truth will set you free.”

But for the person that believes truth is a matter of opinion, morality (right and wrong) is subjective and created by society, and God is a construct…… you have swallowed the biggest con of all and you may as well think you need pepper spray to enjoy a simple healthy meal.

I’m more than sure before I came along that night, the CO’s told the inmate, “We can do this the easy way or the real easy way” and gave him his own choices and consequences. CO’s really don’t like working in a gassed environment anymore than anyone else does and having to deal with all the paperwork and disruption to a calm normal routine to work than anyone else in their right mind.

When I came along to talk to the guy who had to be stripped from his contaminated clothing and left alone in a cell to dry out and shower and rinse repeat for hours until the feeling of dancing in a furnace stopped… I couldn’t say much more than this.

“Hey, I am your medic. Tell me your name. Do you know where you are and what happened to you? Ok good now let me tell you what is going on. You have been sprayed because you disobeyed authority guiding you to do what is right. If you cooperate, everything will go well with you and you will feel better much sooner and you will be allowed out of here at some point. Right now you are alive, I know it sucks and you hurt, but it will be ok soon and the hurt will stop. But for now, you have to remain as calm as you can, breathe in short breathes until you can breathe deeper without puking all over yourself and this will stop soon. Don’t do this to yourself again, ok?”

Jesus said it shorter and sweeter when He told the people who followed Him, who were healed by Him, who were set free by Him such as the adultress that religious leaders wanted to stone, “Go and sin no more.”
