ShotShow 2020
Olen Baker • November 8, 2024

I reached out to nearly a dozen groups that covered Shotshow to see if they wanted to collaborate on some of the new products coming out in 2020 for the gun markets.

And as much as I would like to say I found a crew willing to work together for the good of everyone… not so much.

I got a reply from... one, who is actually the one I least expected to hear back from due to the heavy amount of lifting they do in the gun world. Which is something I would love to help shine a light out to people along with the effort a lot of others are putting out there that I don’t want to step all over and repeat what has been said and done.

Maybe the name scared some of them away?

I would still like to point out some of the guns and a little gear coming out that I thought is worth making everyone aware of, as well as my few pennies on how shotshow turned out this year.

For people that may not know what Shotshow is… it’s a Vegas convention of the industries manufacturers and personalities in one place.

For people that may not know what Shotshow is… it’s a Vegas convention of the industries manufacturers and personalities in one place. And while media people such as myself are welcome to come and see what is happening with manufacturers such as Colt, Smith and Wesson, Remington, Winchester, Glock, H&K, and every arms maker you can shake a stick at that comes to Vegas to show off... Shotshow doesn’t want anything from there made political.

I can respect that for an article on Shotshow. Hopefully they can respect my First Amendment rights on other articles not strictly dealing with Shot Show, because I have a very difficult time not giving Salt and Light to good guys with guns.

But this year, there didn’t seem to be a lot of ground shaking new guns so much as people just finding ways of improving what is already out there. Somek like PSA did that in ground shaking fashion, others, like H&K just found another way of slicing bologna for another buck.

And I would have loved finding anything new happening with the 1911 world… and yes I saw what STI is doing, and yeah I saw the new kimber… I am still scratching my head.

What did I find to be interested in?

Mossberg 940 JM pro

Looks like Mossberg did right by taking an autoloader that Jerry Miculek had custom tuned for running and gunning, and making available to the public. Jerry’s Daughter Lena also is responsible for key features such as the adjustable stock and polished loading port that won’t peel the hide from your thumb, making this a competition gun ready to race out of the box.

9+1 capacity 12gauge

Msrp $1,015

Ruger 57

For years now the only handgun that was chambered for the 5.7x28 pistol round with a rifle velocity has been the FN five-seven. FN also chambered the round in their P90 Personal Defense Weapon (sub machine gun isn’t very politically correct).

Now, Ruger has stepped up to the plate and is helping to open the market to more than just the FN brand, which hopefully will help drop the prices offered by ammo manufacturers. Too soon to tell if FNH will feel any need to drop the price point on their five-seven.

It is also worth noting that CMMG announced at Shotshow they would be putting out a conversion kit for AR’s and using 40 round mags.

Ruger-57 msrp $799

PS9 Dagger from Palmetto State Armory

PSA got busy this last year and it showed with a lot of new products that will be coming out this year. I had a very hard time not just making this the “PSA list of guns from shotshow I want” and instead putting the one from the bunch that is at the top of my “need to buy” list.

I haven’t made any secret of the fact I am no fan of glocks. But there is an argument on owning a plastic brick of a gun that will always function from the box, under any circumstance and condition you realistically will be encountering.

Having said that… making a “glock” in the USA, and dropping the price point to nearly half… makes my gun arguments over aesthetics… an impractical argument over fashion statements.

PSA’s Dagger is reported to come with loaded features that include a threaded barrel and a sight platform for red dots. As it is the standard features will have iron rear sights, opposed to the plastics glock has been using, and will run on glock 19 mags.

Msrp $299

Loaded $350

Shadow systems mr920

Now before you say, “yet another glockish” let me say it for you and add the “hang on a minute.”

This gun is aimed more at end gun customized features, that normally would run a glock up 3 times or more from its original price to make this gun shoot with little recoil and shoot accurately and run the trigger faster than a politician can run their mouth. On media range day at shotshow, people were taking 100 yard shots with it.

Despite it’s higher price, and due to its performance, this gun is at the top of my “need to buy” list.

The fact Shadow Systems is a Texas company, just puts a cherry on the top of it all.

Msrp starts at $799

Heritage arms rough rider rancher

Everyone has their fun .22 plinker.

At the moment mine is a nickle plated gallery gun made by Taurus that is the same made by Rossi after the Winchester pump .22

Heritage arms only offers this model in the .22Lr, but at a very affordable price point for something you can start a kid to learn the appreciation and history behind guns. For adult fun time in a .45 LC or even .38 spl/.357 mag, the same model is offered by Cimarron Arms, and Uberti. Although I think I would have to go with the remington version of the revolving carbine.

Msrp $297

Worth noting:

Holosun

Trijicon and Aimpoint and Leupold are going to have to look out.

From what I am seeing in Holosun, we have a budget friendly option for a red dot that is every bit as durable and reliable as the top name brands while able to sustain a battery life of 50K hours, and has a battery trey to make it much easier to swap out once every other leap year or so when your battery goes dead and forces you to remember how to use those old iron sights. Their heavy hitter is the 509T model made with a titanium housing and enough features to make sure this works in any lighting condition.

Msrp for the 509T $430

Honorable Mentions

Colt is making a new generation of king cobra available to the market again

H&k is finally opening the door to civilians and offering a “sporting” version of the MP5.

Makes me wonder if they heard Palmetto State Armory is going to take over that market with their version that was among the PSA guns announced in this years line up.

Dishonorable mentions...

Wtf glock 44?

A .22LR for more than the cost of getting a conversion kit? And it is having reliability issues? Really?

Stay in your lane with plastic bricks that spit 9mm before highpoint becomes a threat.
